Academics >> What the School Says
As an Art College, the Lyme Academy is committed to provide the best education in Drawing, Painting, and Sculpture, centering its curriculum on the representational study of Nature and the Human Figure. The distinguished faculty provides inspiration combined with a contemporary focus on the history, traditions, and principles of the Fine Arts to students of all ages, regardless of race, creed, sex, or national origin.

The Lyme Academy is a studio-centered Art College. By this we mean student life takes place in the studio – the center of life for a visual artist. Walk into a studio and you'll immediately sense the commitment and dedication of the artists who are pursuing their vision. The facilities are designed to assist those who are fully engaged in creating art and building a solid foundation for their development as artists in an Art College dedicated to the Fine Arts.

The Fundamentals of Art Program provides courses based on our Foundation (Freshman) Year program. Classes run for 10 weeks and introduce students to the skills and techniques necessary for creating real-life 3-D forms on paper and in clay with accuracy and efficiency. Upon completion of these courses, students will have developed the confidence, competence, and skills necessary to work independently, or continue their studies at our Art College, pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts or a 3-year Certificate.

The Pre-College Art Program is sponsored by the National Endowment For The Arts, The Frank Loomis Palmer Fund, Community Foundation of South Eastern Connecticut, Xerox Foundation, and the Citigroup Foundation.

Lyme Academy College also offers a three-year certificate program for students who are interested only in pursuing studio skills at an art school. So if you're considering art colleges, or art schools dedicated to strengthening Fine Arts skills and disciplines, our school may be of interest to you. Certificate students enroll in their own version of the BFA curriculum emphasizing Studio courses. Other than two semesters of Survey Art History, Liberal Arts & Sciences courses are not required. However, you may choose either a studio elective or Liberal Arts & Science elective as you progress in the curriculum.
