10 Essentials You Can’t Forget to Bring to College (Part 2)

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

Don’t forget to check out Part 1 of the 10 Essentials You Can’t Forget to Bring to College!

5. Flip Flops
This was the first thing I realized I had forgotten when I got to college. After a long day of driving, moving, unpacking, and saying goodbyes, it was time to shower before going out. So I gathered up my things, headed to the shower, and realized immediately after stepping in that I would be needed some footwear; and Boston College is a clean place, and this was after one day of people using these things. College bathrooms and shower stalls become gross, inevitably, so prepare yourself; you never know what you’ll be stepping in or on, so wear some flip flops to shower and save yourself the hassle.

4. Brita Pitcher
This is becoming a surprisingly popular item in college dorm rooms, for the simple reasons that it not only works, but the tap water in dormitories is not particularly pleasant to drink in large quantities. Keeping cases of bottled water wastes a ton of space, and going to the dining hall whenever you want a drink is a nuisance. A Brita pitcher is a great alternative, to keep a surprising amount of water cold and clean for whenever you want it. The filters also last for about 3 months at a time as far as I know, so not too much maintenance is required. Tip: Instead of saying “let’s test the Brita to see if it really works” like my friends and I did, by pouring a beer through it, and subsequently ruining the filter, take my word for it: the Brita filters work! In went beer, out came clean drinking water!

3. Duct Tape
The common fix-all, cure-all known as duct tape is a lifesaver in college. It really can pretty much do anything. Need something to stick your poster to the wall? Put some duct tape on the back, and they won’t fall down. Did your roommates wrestle, fall onto your bookcase, and break multiple shelves? Duct tape will put them back together. Need something to tie your roommate to the chair he fell asleep studying in? Well, you get the idea. Like formal wear, having duct tape on hand will help you out when you least expect it, but will do so way more frequently than you would believe.

2. Microwave
Surprisingly enough, a lot of kids decide not to bring a microwave because: [1] they think their roommate will bring one [2] it’s going to take up too much space [3] they think they will be able to just use someone else’s or [4] they just forget to bring one. Make certain you or your roommate have a microwave! Do not rely on other people for this, it is too important! The microwave will most likely be used more than any other item in your room. Seriously, our microwave was destroyed due to constant usage (and overcooking leading to exploding food) by the end of four years — TV dinners, Mac-n-Cheese, popcorn, Ramen Noodles, reheating pizza, making coffee – these things also become critical during late night study sessions, before early exams, or when you get back in from an extremely late night of partying.

1. Aspirin
Okay, so here it is. The number one item you absolutely cannot forget to bring to college. Aspirin. Whether you’re nursing a hangover, or your head hurts from studying too much, or your ears are bleeding from your roommate blasting a little too much Coheed and Cambria, aspirin will be one of your best friends. Although its easy to get at a store if you need it, there’s no substitute for having it there to provide you immediate relief. Bring a bottle, and thank me later.

10 Essentials You Can’t Forget to Bring to College (Part 1)

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

Okay, so at this point you just need to face it. You will get to college and realize that you forgot something essential. It happens every year, without fail. However, we’ve put together this list of things that we think are the most often forgotten, yet essential items you’ll need to survive college.

10. Detergent
The laundry needs to get done, whether you like it or not. This is one of the first things I had to learn how to do when I left for school, and I was terrible at it. It didn’t help, however, that I didn’t bring any detergent with me. Detergent is one of those things you’ll need pretty frequently, and if you don’t have it on hand, it is a nuisance to find. Asking your friends constantly gets them annoyed too, so do yourself a favor and pack a giant bottle of it. Tip #1: Do not leave detergent in the laundry room. It is a hot commodity in the dorms, and will get snatched up immediately. Tip #2: It does not hurt to pretend you forgot the detergent when there is a cute girl in the laundry room. This serves as a decent ice-breaker. Even better is acting innocent and having them show you how to do laundry. They go for it every single time.

9. Sheets
Far worse than forgetting laundry detergent is forgetting an extra set of bed sheets. At some point in time, you will get your sheets filthy at an inopportune time, such as right before bed, when you don’t want to be doing laundry. Waiting until the next day might be fine if you spill a bit of water on them, or drop a piece of Mac-and-Cheese, but when your roommate stumbles in and throws up on your bed, or the random drunk guy who has wandered into your room spills his beer everywhere, this is no longer an option. Plus, you need an extra clean set around to make that bed look extra comfy if you’re having a…ahem…friend over.

8. Cleaning Supplies
So let’s suppose you’ve been fortunate enough to avoid any bed-dirtying incidents for the time being; getting the room dirty is far, far more common and you will need to be supplied when hurricanes strike your living area. Again, this could be in the form of spilled beer, gum in the carpets, a dirty bathroom / shower, or a dropped piece of late-night pizza. Make sure to have some things on hand for when this happens: Fantastic is great for cleaning showers, sinks, counters, and tile floors. This makes a toilet brush, and some other form of a scrub brush essential though. You’ll also want something like Oxy-Clean to get those stains out of carpets. Tip: Bring Febreeze. Not only will it make the room smell nicer, but you can also do like my freshman year roommate when you run out of clean clothes. Spray some Febreeze on it!

7. Power Strips
Sorry guys, this has nothing to do with the ladies! We’re talking about surge protectors here, and you’re going to need a few at the very least. You will probably have only 1 or 2 outlets to work with, and you’ll have to find space to plug in a TV, microwave, multiple lamps, a computer, speakers, phone charger, camera charger, printer, and a whole bunch of other things. Don’t be surprised if you’re plugging multiple surge protectors into each other, its just par for the course. But don’t forget these trusted friends, because unplugging and plugging things over and over to make space becomes ridiculously annoying.

6. Formalwear
If I had to venture a guess, this would be one of the things that is most often forgotten (for good reason, I suppose – who thinks they will need a suit their first year of university?) but very commonly needed in random situations. These situations tend to come up in two scenarios; by far the most common is oral presentations and the second most common is someone wanting to go out into the city for a nice dinner date. Oral presentations are surprisingly common in college, even in bigger classes, and for these types of things you should really dress to impress, therefore a nice suit is recommended. Nice dinner dates will also become more common at this point in your life, whether you’re the one asking or being asked out. You will really be surprised at the number of times people are looking for a nice pair of slacks, a suit coat, a tie, or any combination of these (or a dress if you’re a woman) and do not have them. They take up minimal space in your closet, so do yourself a favor and bring something with you; it’ll help you out when you least expect it.

Stay tuned for Part 2 of the list, coming soon!
