Hofstra University Hosts Final Presidential Debate

Thursday, October 16th, 2008

In case you are wondering why Hofstra University got the plum job of hosting the final debate between presidential hopefuls Barack Obama and John McCain, here’s your answer:

Hofstra University in Hempstead, NY (Long Island) is home to the Peter S. Kalikow Center for the Study of the American Presidency. While many colleges and universities offer American history and political science among their academic majors, Hofstra is one of the only schools that allows for such a concentrated study on the office of the American President.

There is a lengthy application process for colleges to complete in order to be chosen as a debate site, but Hofstra had lots of backing from various supporters on the local, state, and federal levels of government, thanks to its excellent academic program focusing on the presidency.

Hey Hofstra students—any of you snag a ticket to the event? Tell the CampusCompare universe all about it!

Wanna Be an Advertising Major? Filmmaker Kevin Smith Could Use Your Help

Wednesday, October 15th, 2008

As a fan of film director Kevin Smith’s work, I’ve been eagerly awaiting the arrival of his newest film, Zack and Miri Make a Porno.

What I didn’t count on is that I’d be thoroughly enjoying the print advertising debacle that is heralding the approach of Mr. Smith’s film.

You see, with a title like Zack and Miri Make a Porno, the Weinstein Company, which is in charge of the film’s release, is running into some marketing and advertising issues. In some family-friendly venues, the movie’s title is enough to ruffle some feathers, and as far as having movie stills to promote the film, well . . .

Don’t worry, Moms and Dads—I’m not going there.

What I am going to say, however, is that it’s a cool predicament to be in, if you are an advertising exec. It’s not money you’re worried about, it’s content. Which means pulling every trick that you’ve ever learned in college as an advertising or a marketing major.

Have you seen the billboards? Creative, though tame considering the title of the movie they promote.

CampusCompare lists hundreds of schools offering majors in advertising or marketing. Major in one of these programs and one day you, too, can help Kevin Smith out of another advertising dilemma.
