10 Accessories Needed for a College Party (Part I)

One of the best ways to meet new people at college is by attending parties. It’s a great way to expand your circle of friends, and as we all know, meeting that special someone is a lot easier after four or five shots of Patron. However, if you’re never returning the favor, those party invites are going to start disappearing faster than all the cute girls when the hockey team shows up. So here are the 10 Accessories Needed for a College Party in your own dorm room or apartment.

10. Shot Glasses
Shot glasses are multi-purpose party accessories. Not only do they provide a convenient way to consume hard alcohol quickly, but they are also necessary for various other games, such as quarters and power hours. They are small, inexpensive, and easy to store, so make sure you have at least 4 or 5 on hand in your dorm for when a group of friends randomly drops by on a Tuesday night because they heard some guy in the elevator say he thought class was canceled the next day.

9. Solo Cups
Like their smaller counterpart, the shot glass, Solo Cups prove useful in many circumstances. They provide a cheap way to dispense alcohol, namely beer (but also mixed drinks), and there is basically no clean-up afterwards because they’re so cheap you just throw them away and buy new ones. Additionally, you’ll need these warriors for some of the most popular games, including Beirut and Flip Cup.

8. Deck of Cards

Drinking games are some of the best icebreakers at college parties. Beirut, Flip Cup, Quarters, and Land Mines are all awesome games, but the best way to get the conversation – and the alcohol – flowing is by playing a card game. Asshole, Kings, Bullshit, and Screw The Dealer are extremely fun to play with a big group, and more importantly, are social by their very nature. And as fun as Beirut is, you’ll sometimes have that pair of cocky kids who take the game way too seriously and ruin the laid-back vibe that you want at a party. So save the Beirut for when everyone is already drunk and get the party started with a few card games.

7. Mixers
If you want to throw a good party, it’s important to have a variety of drinks available so that nobody is left out. And just because you think you’re a beer connoisseur because you drink (insert the name of your local microbrew here) doesn’t mean that everyone at the party will share your sophisticated taste. If the girls aren’t drinking, your party is going to flop. So make sure you at least have a few different fruit juices (orange, cranberry, etc.) and sodas around. If you want to get fancy and really make an impression, get some margarita and Pina Colada mixes and maybe some grenadine syrup for Tequila Sunrises.

6. Decorations
Wanting to throw an actual party on short-term notice – not just you and your buddies getting wasted playing Halo or watching Old School, but an actual group of people for some social fun – is a circumstance you will find yourself in often enough. We recommend having some basic party decorations on hand, so that it doesn’t feel like you’re just getting drunk in your dorm… even when you’re just getting drunk in your dorm room. The simplest premise to follow is if there’s a holiday coming up (Christmas, Halloween, etc) get some of the basics (some Santa hats or a hanging skeleton) and set the theme according to that holiday. Tell people to dress up in an appropriate costume. If you’re stuck between holidays, make people bring the theme / decorations to the party: Golf Pros and Tennis Hos, Corporate Lives and Trophy Wives, Togas, and Dancing through the Decades (aka 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s) are all popular choices.
