The Mid American Conference

The Mid-American conference (MAC) is, you guessed it, an athletic conference made up of colleges in the mid-America. Member colleges stretch from New York to Illinois. Nine of the 12 full members schools are in Ohio and Michigan with single members also located in Illinois, Indiana and New York.

The schools participate in NCAA Division I and for football in the top level of Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS).

The MAC has been called the conference of Quarterbacks because of the accomplishment of players in the National Football League.

And the conference isn’t just all star at the level of sports. It boasts the highest amongst all 11 NCAA Division 1 FBS conferences for graduation rates.

Mid-American conference schools participate in 23 sports—11 for men and 12 for women including baseball, basketball, cross-country, field hockey, football, golf, gymnastics, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, indoor and outdoor track, volleyball and wrestling.

Mid-American conference teams include: Akron Zips, Bowling Green Falcons, Buffalo Bulls, Kent State Golden Flashes, Miami RedHawks, Ohio Bobcats, Temple Owls (football only), Ball State Cardinals, Central Michigan Chippewas, Eastern Michigan Eagles, Northern Illinois Huskies, Toledo Rockets and the Western Michigan Broncos.

The Big East Conference

Don’t be fooled by the name Big East. It is a collegiate athletics conference made up of 17 universities in the Northeastern, Southeastern and Midwestern United States.

Members of the Big East Conference are: University of Cincinnatti, University of Connecticut, DePaul University, Georgetown University, University of Louisville, Marquette University, University of Notre Dame, University of Pittsburgh, Providence College, Rutgers University, St. John’s University, Seton Hall University, University of South Florida, Syracuse University, Villanova University, West Virginia University.

The Big East is big into NCAA sports. 23 to be exact including: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, field hockey, golf, lacrosse, rowing, soccer, softball, swimming & diving, tennis, indoor & outdoor track and volleyball.

Eight of the 17 are football members and they compete in the Bowl Championship Series in the Division 1 Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS, formerly Division 1-A), the top level of NCAA competition. Georgetown and Villanova compete in the Football Championship (formerly known as Division 1-AA) and Notre Dame plays as a FBS independent.

Big East Scoreboard

  • Of the Big East’s 16 full members, 15 have been to the Final Four (that’s 93%)—by far the most of any conference. (the only college that never made it is South Florida.
  • Pittsburgh won the 2007-2008 Men’s Basketball Tournament Championship
  • Connecticut won the 2007-2008 Women’s Basketball Tournament Championship
