GLEE: Singing and dancing your way into college admissions

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

The battle for high school hot-shot has never been so delightful as with Fox’s new show aimed at teen audiences, “Glee“. Instead of the parade of tarted up debutantes and L.A. dilettantes that we’re used to seeing on the likes of the CW, Fox’s “Glee” gives us a refreshing look at the life of your average ho-hum teen in suburban Ohio. Instead of partying at the latest NYC hotspot à la Gossip Girl, the teens of McKinley High School gravitate towards another kind of club-Glee Club that is.

Glee Club is made of a group of high school misfits with a passion for performing choreographed show tunes. Together, they must battle the ups-and-downs of high school, like being bullied by the “Cheerios”, McKinley’s band of aerobic ice queens led by a militantly psychotic coach (the hilarious Jane Lynch). The show does an excellent job of portraying the landscape of a suburban high school, where what you’re good at defines who you are.

If the kids of Glee are are the school’s underdogs, it’s not for long. Despite what the Cheerios may say, they are just the kind of applicants that colleges are drooling over. Their dazzling, driven, and more than a bit melodramatic behavior will make for a great college application. And really entertaining TV.

So, what does your extracurricular activity say about you on your college applications?

Glee Club/ Drama Club: You have real dedication to something you love. Music isn’t easy, and it takes hours of practice and rehearsal. You’re not afraid of the spotlight, which makes you a natural campus leader. But you also may have a flare for the dramatics, on stage and in life as well.

Cheerleading: You have a lot of school spirit, and you’re a joiner. You’re a real team player (you know how to catch someone who’s falling, literally). This is great, but sometimes you can be a bit too worried about blending in with the crowd. Don’t be afraid to stand out on your college applications!

Debate/Model UN: You like to argue, and you stick to your guns. You’re not afraid to give your opinion in class.

Track: You’re absolutely driven. Maybe a bit of a loaner, team sports were never your thing. But colleges know that once you pick your major, you’ll be totally committed to excelling in your field.

Yearbook: You’re a bit introspective, but that makes you a great documenter. You also have a lot of school spirit and you will be a devoted alumni.

College Admissions April Fools

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009

It looks like UC San Diego has a twisted sense of humor. In a terrible twist of internet fate, rejected UC San Diego applicants were emailed a college acceptance message congratulating them on their admittance and inviting them to tour the campus.college acceptance rates

UC San Diego just had their most college application submissions to date, with over 46,000 prospective freshman. The university typically accepts a little over 43% of applicants, but with such a large application pool their college acceptance rate dropped by almost 5%.

“JK,  rejects,”  says UC San Diego.

Within hours of sending out congratulatory emails to over 28,000 rejected students, the university college admissions office sent out apologies informing the students of their blunder and correcting the mistake.

What ever happened to no “backsies”?

College Acceptance Rates

Thursday, March 26th, 2009

Figuring out college acceptance rates is easy with CampusCompare’s free “What Are My Chances?” app. Try “What Are My Chances?” now to find out your real chances based on college acceptance rates across the country.

College acceptance rates are an important factor to consider when deciding where to apply to college. College admissions officers typically have a ton of college applications to sort through, and for highly-selective colleges, there are certain criteria you must meet in order to make the cut. To save yourself unnecessary work, application fees and heartache, it’s important to ask yourself, “What are my chances of getting into college at this school?” before filling out a college application. It stands to reason - if you apply to colleges where your chances are slim, you’ll be less likely to receive that college acceptance letter in the mail.

There are plenty of free tools available to help you on your road to college acceptance. The lower their college acceptance rates are, the harder it will be to get in. Using CampusCompare’s apps will help you determine whether the school is a safety, reach, or target school for you. Be realistic about your goals and fill out college application forms in all three categories of colleges so that you can ensure college acceptance.
